The Detroit Chapter was established in 1950 and currently has 33 active members and four Lifetime members.
Sponsored by the Pittsburgh Chapter, The Detroit Chapter of the Northeasterners was installed in October of 1950. In turn, Detroit sponsored Chicago in 1961 and co-sponsored Indianapolis in 1962. In the beginning, our fabulous Chapter consisted of 20 congenial and charming ladies as charter members with a focus on enjoying friendships. Now, 70 years later, our focus remains the same – friendship then and friendship now.
Attending a Detroit Northeasterners meeting is something we all look forward to rather than dread as with some other organizations. Eight months out of the year, our Chapter meets regularly to take care of business. But our meetings are far from “regular”. During this time together, we break bread, share life events, and enjoy much fun and fellowship. As a kick-off to the Christmas season, each year on the second Sunday in December, we host a fabulous party which includes family and our close friends.
Approximately every 15 years, we host a National Convention where all the chapters across the country converge on Detroit for a weekend of fellowship and frivolity. During these weekends, it’s clear our husbands – known as Lords – enjoy the fellowship just as much as the Northeasterners. We hosted our first Convention in 1953 and are in the midst of planning for 2023. Our theme is Solid Gold.
Although our focus is fun and fellowship, Detroit does have a serious side. During our 70 years, we have made financial contributions to many Detroit area and national organizations. Some of the recipients are March of Dimes, Detroit Day School for the Deaf, Friends of the Detroit Library, American Cancer Society, Young Artist, Inc., Mother Waddles Mission, Duffield School, Detroit and Pontiac Public Schools to name a few.
Through the years we have welcomed many new members. Our membership consists of several mothers and daughters, daughters-in-law, friends and cousins. We are proud to have at this time, from our charter members: three daughters, four daughters-in-laws and a granddaughter (3rd generation). We truly are a family.
We celebrated 70 years in 2020, reflecting on fond memories of years past. From Chapter meetings, Christmas parties and Conventions, there is so much love and laughter. We look forward to many more years of fun and friendship!
